Food traceability is of utmost importance for the safety of the American
public and quality of the American food industry. Over the last decade, the Food
and Drug Administration recalled hundreds of items of unknown origin due to the presence of contaminants. The
recalls often highlight the complexity of food distribution in the
USA, especially with food coming in from abroad. Stable isotope analysis may aid in investigations of contamination
by providing information on the region-of-origin of food products.
