Preparing samples for submission

We usually discuss preparing samples for submission with customers on an individual basis. The information below is a general guideline for some of the more common samples received for isotope analyses.

Dried animal and vegetation samples should be submitted in glass or plastic vials with a screw cap. Please tape the junction between the cap and vial in order to ensure the vial does not open during transit. Label each vial with a unique identifier. Provide a separate sheet with a complete listing and description of all water samples submitted for analysis.

Dried food samples should be submitted in glass or plastic vials with a screw cap. Please tape the junction between the cap and vial in order to ensure the vial does not open during transit. Label each vial with a unique identifier. Provide a separate sheet with a complete listing and description of all water samples submitted for analysis.

Fabric and paper samples should be submitted in glass or plastic vials with a screw cap. Please tape the junction between the cap and vial in order to ensure the vial does not open during transit. Label each vial with a unique identifier. Provide a separate sheet with a complete listing and description of all water samples submitted for analysis.

Hair samples should be bundled into a lock and taped to a sheet of paper (minimum 15 strands for H&O isotopes, 30 for C&N isotopes). Samples should be dry and cleared of dirt, blood, and skin to the extent possible. Identify the root end of the hair on the paper. Label each sample with a unique identifier. Provide a separate sheet with a complete listing and description of all hair samples submitted for analysis. Insert the hair containing the paper into an evidence folder or envelope.

At the time that samples are submitted, please also send an electronic version of the lists of samples being submitted to: analysis_request@isoforensics.com.
